Our trip to China was a last minute affair in the spring of 2006. We found China Highlights on Internet, and as soon as we received a rapid and detailed response from Ryan Chen, we knew we were dealing with a professional travel agency based in Guilin, China. As soon as we arrived in the first city where we had their local guide and driver, we knew that we were right! We had only the guides, drivers, cars, meals and entrance fees to museum, shows, etc, with China Highlights. We highly recommend not only these services, but travelers should book the entire trip with China Highlights, that is all domestic flights, river excursions such as Yangtze, hotels, meals, as well as the local guides and transportation. We are a couple, but this agency will do wonders for couples, small groups of friends or larger groups as well. They can customize anything. Not only that, once you are in China, their guides and drivers are always ready and capable to improvise and add visits and excursions, modify what has been agreed upon. An excellent combination of rigorously following the itinerary and flexibility when this is called for or the opportunity arises. The only surprises are good ones, great suggestions for visits, spontaneous stops along the road, concerts in the city with seats right up front even if you decide on the last minute to attend. The guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, polite and proud to show you their people and country. You will feel in security with the excellent drivers and first class cars or vans, whether you are in the very hectic traffic of modern Shanghai or on small countryside roads. We are including some photos taken with the guides and drivers. Arnold August Louise Gauvreau
Dear Cheryl: We have completed our family trip to China and I will provide you some feedback. Overall we loved visiting China and we found the service and organization of your company was very good. The pre planning was done well and you were very patient in giving me many options for our itinerary. One thing I would recommend be changed is that when a change to the itinerary (mainly flight changes), occurs, your inform the client immediately. In all cases our flight times were different than the original itinerary and we did not find out until we arrived in the city we were to leave from. The accommodations were very good in Xian (Bell Tower Hotel) and Guilin (Bravo Hotel). The hotel in Lhasa (king Sun) was not as nice. The rooms were OK, but the toilets did not work well and the hallway smelt like a sewer. The sites in China are very well presented and very organized for English speaking people. Xian was very interesting and very historical, Lhasa was very beautiful and so different. The altitude sickness was a problem for two of my sons. I suggest you warn people about this more than you do. We still would have gone, but we may have planned it differently. Guilin is so beautiful. Beijing (a guide only from you) was a very educational and the Great Wall was a highlight. One of the main benefits of using China Highlights was the organized service and the informative, well educated and personable guides. Your company must do a great job interviewing your guides because they were all excellent and well prepared, punctual and agreeable to go at our schedule and pace. For a family of five it was the best way to see the highlights at our family pace. The drivers were also all good. We have used other guides in the past and they were not as good as your guides. Also you were very nice to work with and always so pleasant and accommodating. Thank you. We did get tired of some of the guides bringing us to “extra attractions” that had a selling feature at the end. It is obvious the guides get a commission on anything sold via these extra excursions. We didn’t like this. Being offered to go is OK, but to stop unplanned is not required. We will recommend your service to our friends that come to China (I already recommended Mr. Jim Steward to you and he booked his trip with your company). I hope this feedback is useful to you and your company. Hello Elaine, We had a wonderful, and extremely busy, trip. The hotels were excellent, all of the guides (and drivers) were wonderful, the cruise was fantastic, and you chose great places for us to see. The biggest highlight, amongst many, was the Great Wall at Mutianyu. It was absolutely breathtaking. Often when you've heard a lot about a particular place, actually seeing it can be an anti-climax. But not the Great Wall! The Terracotta Warriors were much, much better than I thought they were going to be. I didn?ˉt think there were as many repaired warriors to see, but it was quite astounding. Some of the other highlights were the pandas at Chongqing Zoo (we saw four), the whole cruise, especially the visit to the museum in Wuhan. It was an evening visit and the museum was opened especially for the passengers from our ship. The display was spectacular and we felt very privileged. The driver in Beijing also took us to see the Olympic Stadium which was somewhat out of his way and was much appreciated. Wandering around Shanghai and Beijing was fascinating and the shops are fantastic-much better than at home! Shanghai Museum was also very interesting. I liked the Chinese museums in general as they don?ˉt have an overwhelming amount of exhibits and are very accessible to all tourists in terms of labeling and lay-out. There wasn't much we didn't like, but we probably could have seen less temples -it all got very confusing after a while! It was also a little annoying at times to be taken into the "tourist traps" which were invariably attached to the restaurants where we had lunch. It seemed to waste time when we could have been seeing the sights. Having said that, the silk factory in Shanghai was excellent and we picked up some good bargains. If (when) we visit China again, we'll definitely try to avoid a Golden Week. There were so many people in Beijing it was difficult to move about at the popular tourist places, and the tours of Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden Palace and the Summer Palace were not very pleasant simply because of the throngs of people. I would also have liked to have seen Mao Zedong's body, but the queues were too long. However, apart from my father getting lost in the Summer Palace (we found him again after about 30 minutes), the trip went very smoothly and we all had great fun. We'd all like to thank you for all your hard work and professionalism in organising the trip for us, and we shall certainly be in touch with you to plan our next visit to China. It was a great relief to be able to have confidence that everything would go smoothly. By the way, we were upgraded to the Shangri-la suite and two Junior suites for the cruise for much less than it would have been had we bought them up front. It was still expensive, but worth it as we had our own private deck and great views of everything. Kind regards and many thanks for everything. I'll send some photos in a couple of days. Genevieve and family
Helen Claire Brown's answers to some questions on our post-tour survey: 1. What was the best thing about your trip? Ease of booking and also the spectacular sights along the Gorges. 2. How could China Highlights Travel have assisted you more? Elaine assisted us with everything. I could not fault the level of service provided.
Hello I wanted to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and found the service excellent at all times. We would not hesiate to use the company again or to recommend it to others. Thank you Marc & Jacinda Tillotson
Dear Elaine, Both my wife and want to thank all at China Hightlights who made our first trip to mainland China such a memorable event. China is awesome ! We were met and taken care of very well. We loved every place we saw. Our favorites were our entire stay in Guilin both in the city as well as visiting the rice terraces, taking the Li river cruise and visiting the local silk factory. The designs at the Guilin silk factory were the best we saw in China. We also really enjoyed the Forbidden City,The Great Wall and the Sacred Way while in Beijing, the Classical Gardens in Suzhou and amazing Shanghai. We did not like the pollution or the habit of the older Chines spitting in public. Consider allowing your western guests a la carte lunches in Chinese restaurants with the guides as the Tour lunches left a lot to be desired We plan to return soon to see more of China and will bring our three chrildren and families with us. Rest assured we will use Chinalights again. Please thank Elaine,Freeman,Nathasa and Daniel for the extra special efforts which they put in on our behalf. John and Mahnaz Whelton
Karen, I just wanted to send you a quick email and say that we returned from our Tibet trip and really enjoyed ourselves. I would like to especially compliment the tour guide we had in Lhasa, named Dorjee, who really fit in well with our family and showed us an interesting visit to that city. Thanks for your kind attention to the details of our trip. I hope that in the coming New Year holiday we will have another occasion to book a trip with you. Regards, Tom
Dear Elaine First of all I apologize for the delay in replying to your note. I've been rather busy since my return to Ireland. I had an absolutely wonderful time in China. I loved your country and I certainly will return. Overall I was very pleased with the service from China Highlights especially your own efforts in organizing such a long trip at very short notice and I was sorry that we did not meet in Guilin as you had suggested. I was most appreciative of the fact that all my guides were on time and that my flights, trains and the bus from Chengdu to Chonking left on time. There was a minor problem in Hong Kong when the driver who met me at the airport was sent to the wrong gate by the airline but fortunately you had given me the number for the agency and we found each other quite quickly. I am being very honest with you Elaine because I was very impressed with how you organized my trip and I genuinely had a wonderful time. I found China fascinating. I loved the people whom I found to be very warm and very friendly. This was my first visit but it certainly wont be my last and I would definitely consider using China Highlights again. I do not wish you to use my name or my comments but I will certainly recommend China Highlights to people I meet myself. I am a very experienced traveller and I have a deep interest in the places I travel to and the people I meet there. This is why having inexperienced and ill informed guides is such a problem. It was amazing to be in China at a time when it is changing so fundamentally and so rapidly. So, once again thank you for your assistance. Regards Margaret C Claffey.
Dear Angela,
The best things were the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Martial Arts performance, Roasted Duck dinner at Qianmen Dajie, and the Terra Cotta Warriors. Also, the conversations with our guides talking about the culture and daily life in China. The personal information we learned about our guides was very special. We had two wonderful guides and would highly recommend both of them. Peter and Susan are special. Its the personal conversations that we had with them that we will always remember. Thank you Angela for all of your assistance. We had a wonderful time and we want to thank you and everyone at China Highlights. I'll send some of our photos in a couple of days after they are downloaded and I sort through them.
Thank you
Stephen
