Lao She Memorial Hall
Lao She was the pen name of the writer Shu Qingchun (1899-1966). Being one of the most important writers in the modern times of China, Lao She had left many novels and plays, which deeply affects Chinese people and remembered in the west for his novel Luotou Xiangzi (translated as Rickshaw Boy) and a play entitled Tea House.
The Lao She Memorial Hall is situated in a Hutong alley in Dongcheng District. It is on the site of the courtyard residence which Lao She bought when he returned to China from the United States in 1950. Lao She lived here for 16 years and it is in this house, he wrote 24 plays and two novels, which has 4 million words in total.
The Lao She Memorial Hall covers an area of 400 square meters. Among the displays are cultural mementos and items from his writing desk, copies of his works in various editions, and his unfinished autobiographical work.
