Dashilan
Dashilan, literally the “Great Fence", is Beijing's most famous business area. Dates back to 1488, Dashilan has a history of more than 500 years, now has been a prosperous business area. It was hailed as "the most bustling place in the capital".
Within an area of 1.26 square kilometers exists lots of old but well-preserved buildings, which are an important cultural heritage this ancient capital city. This 270 meters long and nine meters wide street has 37 shops and service establishments.
Home to over 30 century-old firms and stores, such as Tongrentang Traditional Medicine Shop, which has manufactured pills, powders and ointment since 1669; Neiliansheng Satin, Silk and Fur Shop, which opened in 1893. There are also the Neiliansheng Shoemaker's and the Nanyufeng Tobacco Shop, both more than 100 years old.
Apart from the many commercial venues, there were also plenty of public amusements concentrated here. There were five large theaters, the Celebrating Happiness Playhouse, Three Celebrations Playhouse, Extensive Virtue Playhouse, Extensive Harmony Playhouse and the Common Happiness Playhouse.
After 1949, state-run enterprises were established here which enabled Dashilan to supply an even wider range of goods. Nowadays many shops and stores line along both sides of the street. When the crowds of people move back and forth in it, the whole area takes on the scene of bustling bazaar.
